      Beniah Tharp was born near Rich Fork of Abbotts Creek in Rowan Co (now Davidson Co) NC about 10 miles southwest of High Point, NC on 15 Sep 1798 and was taken to Ohio in 1802 (Montgomery County Pioneer Association, Minutes, 30 Nov 1867). On 16 Apr 1823 in Dayton, Montgomery Co, OH; Beniah married Jane Van Cleve, who was born 18 Sep 1802. Jane was the daughter of William Van Cleve who was one of the first settlers of Dayton on 11 Apr 1796. William died in 1828 and in his will wrote "I appoint my son-in-law, Beniah Tharp guardian of my daughter Effie". Beniah is mentioned numerous times in the administrantions of the estate.

Beniah was a brick maker in early Dayton as described in Pioneer Life in Dayton and Vacinity 1796-1840 by John F Edgar, U B Publishing House, Dayton 1896, page 230:
"Beniah Tharp, among the first to make brick here, had his brickyard on Brown Street." From the History of Montgomery County, Ohio by W H Beers Chicago 1882, page 548 "In 1829 the only improvements east of the canal and south of Fifth Street [in Dayton] were the old 'Mother Hess' house on the east side of Brown Street at the alley south of Sixth; the Beniah Tharp and George Shartel houses lower down on Brown Street, and some cabins farther east, occupied by colored people".

On 5 Mar 1831, Beniah was elected a Trustee of Dayton, Ward 5 and was re-elected to this post in 1832. Minutes of the Trustee's meetings for this period of time are in the Wright State Library. Beniah is mentioned many times.

Sometime, probably in the late 1830's, Beniah moved to Wayne Township, Montgomery Co, OH on land; SE 1/4 Section 21, Township 2, Range 8; previously owned by his father-in-law, William Van Cleve. Jane, Beniah's wife, inherited 1/10 of the land and Beniah bought the remaining portion from her brothers and
sisters prior to 23 Feb 1935. Beniah began to pay tax on this land in 1840 and he lived here until 1867 when he moved back to Dayton.

On 15 Mar 1839, after bearing two children, Beniah's wife Jane died. She was reinterred in 1866 in grave no. 6, lot 1150, section 96, Woodland Cemetery, Dayton from some unknown cemetery. On 3 Jan 1843 in Preble Co, OH, Beniah married Harriet Sturr, who was born in 1818 in MD, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Sturr. The family was recorded in the 8 Jun 1860 census for Wayne Township, Montgomery Co, OH, Page 274.

Beniah's first son, Beniah Wilber, by his second wife was born 7 Jul 1844. At the age of 18 on 18 Aug 1862 he enlisted in the Federal Army in the Civil War. He was wounded on Jun 14, 1863 at Windchester, VA and died in Dayton, OH on August 21, 1863
Silsbee Simon Tharp, Beniah's other son by his second wife, was born 2 Sep 1846. He died without marrying on 28 Mar 1869 at the age of 22.

In 1867 Beniah Tharp moved back to Dayton and acquired a simple 5-room federal farmhouse located on the northwest corner of Clay and Van Buren Streets in the east end of Dayton (now the Born/Tharp house at 27 Van Buren St.). The area is currently, 1993, being restored and has been named The Oregon District. The house had been built in 1850 and occupied by Westly Born, also a brickyard operator. Beniah carried out a $2,000 remodeling project, adding an elaborate Italianate Victorian front with 9-foot high windows, a curved staircase with a cherry handrail and upstairs and 18-foot square main bedroom and a small trunk room next to it. The Tharps lived in this house until Beniah's death.
