Engaged. George Fisher Baker 3rd, banker son of the late great banker son of the late great banker; to Frances Drexel Munn, Philadelphia socialite, descendant of Biddies, Drexels, Astors, Munns; in Palm Beach, Fla.
Tragedy has stalked the male line of the Baker family for decades. Anthony’s father, George F. Baker Jr., shot himself to death in 1977 at his 13,000-acre plantation in Florida. He was 62. Twenty-eight years before on the same property, Baker Jr.’s younger brother Grenville Kane Baker was killed by a bullet in the head, not self-inflicted. Three years ago, Anthony Baker’s older brother, George Baker III, also a very experienced pilot, was killed piloting his plane into the Nantucket airport on an especially bad night for navigation.
Mr. Baker, who was sixty-five, is survived by his daughters Asia Alexandra and Callie Frances Victoria Baker, mother Frances Drexel Munn Baker, his sisters Pauline Baker Boardman Pitt, Lavinia Baker Logan, and Kane Kendall Baker, and his friend Mona de Sayve, whom he was planning to marry in the near future. Anthony married Carolyn Arbon. Anthony married Csrol Victoria Oelsner. Anthony Kane Baker was born in 1943 at Manhattan, New York County, New York. He was the son of George Fisher Baker III and Frances Drexel Munn. Anthony Kane Baker died on Jul 9, 2008 at Tenessee River near, Athens, Limestone County, Alabama; in a plane crash.
Many New Yorkers, Palm Beachers and Southamptonites were deeply saddened to hear of the death on Wednesday of Anthony Kane Baker who was killed in a plane crash in the Tennessee River near Athens, Alabama. Mr. Baker had just purchased this new “experimental” amphibious plane, and was out for a training flight with its owner, pilot James Don Langford, who was also killed.
The small two-seat Colyaer S100 Freedom, a light sport plane made in Spain, went into the Tennessee River south of Limestone County shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
Mona de Sayve and Anthony Baker, two weeks ago in New York at the home of Hilary and Wilbur Ross.
By the time rescue workers got there, the plane was upside down in five feet of water about 200 yards from where it hit the water. Both victims were still strapped into their seats and the plane had partially collapsed around them.
Anthony Baker was a very well-liked, quiet sort of man, basically a shy man with passionate interests, including flying. Another of his passions was residential architecture and the architectural history of the development of Long Island as an area of estates. He co-edited with Robert MacKay and Carol Traymor, a major anthology “Long Island Country Houses and Their Architects, 1860 -1940.”
Anthony was a scion of a famous American New York banking family. He was a gentle man and wore his heritage with a modesty that used to be admired as a measure of class and aristocracy. His great-grandfather George F. Baker started First National City Bank in the last quarter of the 19th century, which over the years has morphed into what is known as Citigroup today. Great-grandfather Baker provided much of the initial funding for the Harvard Business School. The Baker Library at Dartmouth is named for him, as is Baker Field at Columbia University.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 22, for Anthony Kane Baker, a longtime Palm Beach resident who was killed Wednesday when his lightweight airplane crashed into the Tennessee River.
Mr. Baker was 65.
The funeral will take place at 3 p.m. at St. John's of Lattingtown Episcopal Church at 325 Lattingtown Road in Locust Valley, Long Island, N.Y.
A reception will follow at the Creek Club on Horse Hollow Road, also in Locust Valley.
Born in New York, he was the son of Mrs. Peter Bezencenet of Paris (née Frances Drexel Munn), now of Palm Beach, and the late George F. Baker Jr.
He was the great-grandson of George F. Baker, one of the founders of the bank that would later become Citibank.
He was a graduate of the Brooks School and of Trinity College in Hartford. He also studied at the Pratt Institute in New York.
The Baker family has a long history of philanthropy. George Fisher Baker's 1924 donation to Harvard University, his alma mater, funded the construction of the Harvard Business School campus and the Baker Library, and in 1926, a gift to Dartmouth College endowed the Baker Library there.
Mr. Baker's brother, George F. Baker III, served on the board of dean's advisers at Harvard Business School from 1980-93. He, too, was killed in a small plane crash, near Nantucket, R.I., in December 2005.
"We're absolutely devastated at the news," said Margo dePeyster, Mr. Baker's friend of 20 years. "Nobody can believe it. He was the most devoted father, son, husband, friend — just an incredibly giving and loving man. He'll truly be missed."
DePeyster described Mr. Baker as a "talented and gifted" pilot.
"My husband and I flew with him many, many times and so enjoyed the beauty of it," she said. "He made it a wonderful experience every time."
"He was a wonderful guy," said David Ober, director of Sotheby's Palm Beach office.
"He had this dry sense of humor that a lot of people didn't know about because he was soft-spoken and you had to listen closely. He was quietly irreverent."
Alan Lebow and his wife, Patricia, traveled often with Mr. Baker.
"Anthony was a true Renaissance man with far-reaching interests in poetry, buildings, old cars and sea vessels," Lebow said. "The world has lost a wonderful man who had a true thirst for knowledge and gave so much of himself to those he cared for."
Mr. Baker was a trustee of the George F. Baker Trust, created in 1937 to support education, medicine, social services and civic organizations.
He also was an architectural preservationist of note. He was the author, with Carol Graynor and Robert Mackay, of Long Island Country Houses and Their Architects: 1860-1940, published by W.W. Norton in 1967.
Mr. Baker was married twice, to Caroline Arbon, and to Carol Victoria Oelsner, with whom he has two daughters, Callie and Asia.
In addition to his daughters, and his mother, Mr. Baker is survived by his sister, Pauline Pitt; his half-brother, Kane Baker; and his half-sister, Lavinia Baker.

Pierre Matisse, 89, Art Dealer and Promoter, Dies
Published: August 11, 1989
LEAD: Pierre Matisse, the internationally known art dealer who was the longtime champion of Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Jean Dubuffet, Balthus and Yves Tanguy in the United States, died Wednesday in a hospital near his home in St.-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, France, after a stroke. He was 89 years old.
Pierre Matisse, the internationally known art dealer who was the longtime champion of Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Jean Dubuffet, Balthus and Yves Tanguy in the United States, died Wednesday in a hospital near his home in St.-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, France, after a stroke. He was 89 years old.
Known worldwide for his sense of quality, his reserve, his perseverance and his horror of personal publicity, Mr. Matisse had what might have seemed to be the ideal entree to his profession. The son of Henri Matisse, one of France's greatest artists, he had been constantly around both the house and the studio in Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris, in the years before 1914 when his father was producing one masterpiece after another. In more than one of those paintings, he played a conspicuous role.
But when he came to the United States in 1925 to become an art dealer, it was with little encouragement from his father. (In 57 years at 41 East 57th Street he never had a Matisse exhibition.) 'End of an Era'
Eugene Victor Thaw, the collector and former dealer, said of Mr. Matisse yesterday: ''It may be a cliche, but this is truly the end of an era, both in art dealing and in taste. Matisse personified the best of the judgment that brought great European modernist art to the States, and his name stood for a standard of quality that is now a thing of the past.
''He was a man of unerring eye, even in areas outside the field in which he specialized. In the heyday of his gallery and in his own house, there were always unexpected things - above all, wonderful examples of pre-Colombian art and tribal art of all kinds. In his way of merging European art with tribal art, he harked back to the early days of modernist collecting.''
Mr. Matisse began small, selling prints through E. Weyhe Inc. on Lexington Avenue and learning the trade at the Valentine Dudensing Gallery. When he opened under his own name on East 57th Street in 1932, it was in one tiny room at the top of the building. Visitors were few, and initially he was often too shy even to speak to them.
Gradually he moved down the building to his eventual quarters on the fourth floor. Yet in the Depression year of 1932 when he held the first of the 37 Miro exhibitions he was to mount, the public was slow to respond. But as with his exhibitions of Balthus (7 in all), Chagall (16), Dubuffet (12), Giacometti (5) and Yves Tanguy (7), Mr. Matisse had faith in his artists and in himself. Later years proved him right, as one masterpiece after another was sold from his gallery to American collections, public and private, He Helped the Modern William Rubin, formerly director of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, said yesterday: ''Pierre Matisse was the great American dealer of the European Surrealist generation that came of age in the late 1920's and 30's. Considering his importance, he was remarkably unconcerned with his own image. He identified from the beginning with the vanguard generation that was also his own generation. He did not only show their work. He bought it, outright, in the traditional French style of an older generation.
''As a friend of the Museum of Modern Art, he gave the museum the collection of his second wife, Patricia. He also gave many things himself, and he was instrumental in our being able to buy from the Matisse family the great early painting 'Notre Dame, 1914' and two great, late cut-paper works, the 'Souvenir d'Oceanie' and the ''Swimming Bath.' ''
Pierre Matisse was born on June 13, 1900, in Bohain in northern France. He was the younger of two sons of Henri Matisse, the painter, sculptor, draftsman and printmaker, and of his wife, the former Amelie Noemie Parayre. In school in Paris, his only rival in insubordination was his classmate Yves Tanguy, the future Surrealist painter whom he was to represent in New York from 1939 on. In 1918 he was called up for the French Army but did not see active service. Efforts to make a painter of him, under the aegis of the painter Andre Derain, proved unsuccessful, as had his father's earlier attempt to turn him into a virtuoso on the violin. Looking After His Artists
Once set on the path that was to make him famous, he never lost the tenacity with which he had always looked after the interests of his artists. Even when they were no longer living, he missed nothing that concerned them. In 1987, when Chagall had his first major exhibition in Moscow in many years, Mr. Matisse made the journey. And when major sculptures by Giacometti came up at auction in New York in 1988, he took a delight in bidding by telephone (and buying).
In that regard, he never stopped. ''I got my strength from my artists,'' he said some years ago. ''Their strength came from nowhere and seemed to have no logical foundation. But if they had it, how could I not have it, too?''
A naturalized American citizen since 1942, Mr. Matisse was made a chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters and later an officir of the Legion of Honor by the French Government. In 1987 he was awarded the freedom of the city of Venice on the occasion of a major Matisse exhibition there. He was also president of the Art Dealers Association of America from 1964 to 1966.
In 1929 he married Alexina Sattler, who married Marcel Duchamp after their Divorce. His second wife, Patricia O'Connell Kane, died in 1972, and in 1974 he married Maria-Gaetana von Spreti, who survives him. He is also survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Monnier, and by his sons Paul and Peter, the three children of his marriage to Alexina Sattler.
His funeral will be on Monday in St.-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. A memorial service in New York is to be announced in the fall.
He and Patricia O'Connell resided at at 1070 Park Ave, New York City, New York County, New York, on Sep 29, 1952.
