Clifton E. Conover, a prosperous farmer and stockman of Ida county, Iowa, is a worthy native son of that county. He was born on the 2d of October, 1881,
his parents being Cornelius B. and Samantha A. (Rogers) Conover, to whom extended reference is made on another page of this publication. He attended the
country schools in the acquirement of an education and following his graduation took up farming pursuits, to which he has devoted his attention continuously to the present time. Mr. Conover first purchased one hindred and thirty-six acres of land in association with his brother, Clark Henry Conover, and in the year 1920 bought an additional tract of one hundred and thirty-six acres. Golden harvests annually reward his well directed labors, for he utilizes the most scientific methods of farming and is at all times industrious and diligent. He keeps a herd of thirty pure bred Hereford cows (not registered) from which he raises every year a load of calves, which he feeds as baby beeves. He also feeds two or three loads of other cattle for the market yearly, and he is meeting with splendid success as a stockman.

In early manhood Mr. Conover was married to Miss Cora M. Nicholson, daughter of Alexander and Margaret (Park) Nicholson. A biography of her father,
Alexander Nicholson, may be found in another part of this work. To Mr. and Mrs. Conover have been born six children, namely: Alexander Burdette, whose birth occurred August 24, 1909; Cathleen Beryl, whose natal day was March 18, 1912; Cornelius Bourghs, who died in infancy; Sarah Maybell, born May 18, 1917; Jean Elizabeth, born December 19, 1922; and Thomas Wayne, who was born on the 15th of March, 1924.

Mr. Conover gives his political support to the republican party and is now serving acceptably as chairman of Logan township. In religious faith he is a
Presbyterian. He enjoys an extensive and favorable acquaintance in the community which has always been his home and in the development of which he has taken an active and helpful part.

      Clark Henry Conover was born on Oct 9, 1879 at Linn County, Iowa. He was the son of Cornelius Burroughs Conover and Samantha Rogers.

      Cora M. Nicholson was born circa 1889 at Iowa. She was the daughter of Alexander Nicholson and Margaret Park. Cora married Clifton E. Conover, son of Cornelius Burroughs Conover and Samantha Rogers.

     Alexander married Margaret Park.

     Margaret married Alexander Nicholson.

      Alexander Burdette Conover was born on Aug 24, 1909. She was the daughter of Clifton E. Conover and Cora M. Nicholson. Alexander Burdette Conover died in Oct, 1985 at Holstein, Ida County, Iowa, at age 76.

      Cathleen Beryl Conover was born on Mar 18, 1913 at Logan County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Clifton E. Conover and Cora M. Nicholson. Cathleen married Richard Ommo Janssen on Jun 4, 1936. Cathleen Beryl Conover died on Jun 21, 2003 at Cherokee County, Iowa, at age 90. Cathleen was buried on Jun 28, 2003 at Holstein Cemetery, Holstein, Ida County, Iowa.

Services for Cathleen B. "Kate" Janssen, 90, of Cherokee and a former longtime resident of Ida Grove, will be June 28, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in the Holstein Cemetery at Holstein, under the direction of Greenwood Funeral Home of Cherokee.
Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family present 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee.
She died June 21 following a brief illness.
Mrs. Janssen was born March 18, 1913, in Logan Township, Ida County, to Clifton and Cora (Nicholson) Conover. She was educated in country school and later graduated from Holstein High School.
While in high school, she ran on the first track team in the school's history. She then attended Morningside College in Sioux City and received her teaching certificate.
Kate taught rural school, all by herself, that included grades K-8. The classes included some German students who had little understanding of the English language.
On June 4, 1936, she married Raymond Ommo "Dick" Janssen in rural Ida Grove. Kate took on many other jobs during her life, including working at the Holstein Advance as the offset machine operator and also serving as a nurse's aide in the Ida Grove hospital. She and Dick also farmed for many years.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ida Grove for many years, where she was involved with Lutheran Church Circle and the Lutheran Ladies' Aid. Upon moving to Cherokee, she transferred her membership to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. She also was a member of the Lone Star Homemakers.
Kate enjoyed her grandchildren, sports, birdwatching, cooking, reading, flowers and gardening. She passed these passions to her children and grandchildren.-----------
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Martin and husband, Dr. Robert, of Cherokee and Faye Greenway and husband, Chuck, of Independence, Mo; and a son, Steven Janssen and wife, Glenda, of Plano, Texas.
Additional survivors include a brother, Tom Conover and wife Shirley of Holstein, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on July 5, 1985; two brothers, Cornelius and Alex; two sisters, May Bell and Jeanne; and one great-grandchild.

      Beryl Conover was born on Mar 18, 1912. He was the son of Clifton E. Conover and Cora M. Nicholson.

     Cornelius Bourghs Conover died circa 1915. He was born circa 1915. He was the son of Clifton E. Conover and Cora M. Nicholson.

      Sarah Maybell Conover was born on May 18, 1917. She was the daughter of Clifton E. Conover and Cora M. Nicholson.

      Jean Elizabeth Conover was born on Dec 19, 1922. She was the daughter of Clifton E. Conover and Cora M. Nicholson.

      Thomas Wayne Conover was born on Mar 15, 1924. He was the son of Clifton E. Conover and Cora M. Nicholson. Thomas Wayne Conover died after Jun, 2003.

      Hyatt Conover was born circa 1854 at Ohio. He was born on Dec 30, 1854 at Indiana. He was the son of Peter E. Conover and Ann Elizabeth Bodine. Hyatt married Ruth J. Irby, daughter of James D. Irby and Mary Olive Hogan. Hyatt Conover died on Mar 17, 1908 at age 53. Hyatt was buried at Brady Cemetery, Akin, Franklin County, Ilinois.

      Ruth J. Irby was born on Aug 25, 1863 at Hamilton County, Ilinois. She was the daughter of James D. Irby and Mary Olive Hogan. Ruth married Hyatt Conover, son of Peter E. Conover and Ann Elizabeth Bodine. Ruth J. Irby died on Sep 19, 1951 at Franklin County, Ilinois, at age 88.

     James married Mary Olive Hogan.

      Carlos Conover was born on Sep 3, 1880 at Ilinois. He was the son of Hyatt Conover and Ruth J. Irby. Carlos Conover died on Apr 28, 1889 at age 8. Carlos was buried at Brady Cemetery, Akin, Franklin County, Ilinois.

Puckett, daughter of Granville Puckett and Bertha Randolph, on May 8, 1912 at Benton, Franklin County, Ilinois. Talmadge Conover died on Aug 9, 1959 at Ogden, Weber County, Utah, at age 69.

     Ada married Talmadge Conover, son of Hyatt Conover and Ruth J. Irby.

      Hallie B. Puckett was born in 1895 at Franklin County, Ilinois. She was the daughter of Granville Puckett and Bertha Randolph. Hallie married Talmadge Conover, son of Hyatt Conover and Ruth J. Irby, on May 8, 1912 at Benton, Franklin County, Ilinois.

     Granville married Bertha Randolph.

     Bertha married Granville Puckett.

     McKinley Conover died on Jan 29, 1860 at Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington. McKinley married Bertha Gasaway. McKinley Conover was born on Sep 12, 1892. He was the son of Hyatt Conover and Ruth J. Irby.

     Bertha married McKinley Conover, son of Hyatt Conover and Ruth J. Irby.

      Vinta Conover was born on Jan 1, 1897. She was the daughter of Hyatt Conover and Ruth J. Irby. Vinta married Alva Ward. Vinta Conover died on Mar 4, 1961 at Benton, Franklin County, Ilinois, at age 64.

     Alva married Vinta Conover, daughter of Hyatt Conover and Ruth J. Irby.

      Mamie Conover was born on Aug 16, 1882 at Akin, Franklin County, Ilinois. She was the daughter of Hyatt Conover and Ruth J. Irby. Mamie married John Henry Hungate, son of Christopher Columbus Hungate and Margaret Melinda Chambers, on Nov 24, 1901 at Franklin County, Ilinois. Mamie Conover died on Nov 18, 1911 at Akin, Franklin County, Ilinois, at age 29.
