Phyllis Alley Spathelf 1912 ~ 2006 Phyllis Alley Spathelf passed away peacefully August 3, 2006. She was 94 years old. She was born June 6, 1912 in Bancroft, Idaho to George and Henrietta J. Alley. The eldest in a family of six with four brothers and one sister, she moved to Salt Lake City when she was 14 to attend high school and study violin and piano. She was so good at piano that she played for the silent movies in Bancroft. After graduation from high school, she attended LDS Business College and worked in the bank in Bancroft and also in the University of Idaho, Southern branch. Phyllis moved to Washington D.C. where she married her loving husband William G. Spathelf and took a job with Caterpillar Tractor Company. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving as a Primary teacher and music director. She was a devoted mother to her two children, Ellen Spathelf Dickinson and William G. Spathelf. When her children went to college, she returned to work at Catholic University, where she was an expert in preparing mathematical text for publication. She and her husband retired in 1969 and enjoyed traveling until her husband passed away in 1974, a 35 year marriage. She moved to Amherst, Massachusetts to be near her daughter and two grandchildren where she continued to be active in the community, Mormon Church and her philanthropic organization, P.E.O. Phyllis returned to Salt Lake City in 1991 and served as a docent at the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She continued to travel extensively visiting her son and his family in London, England. She remained active well into her 90's, supported by her devoted sister, Laura (Peggy) Alley, her family and friends, music, and church. She is survived by her daughter Ellen (Charles); and son, Bill Deborah); her loving brother, John (Jack) Richard Alley; her loving sister, Laura (Peggy) Ellen Alley; her four grandchildren, Emma Dickinson Brong, William Dickinson, Whitney and Alexandra Spathelf; and five great-grandchildren. She is now reunited with her husband; mother; father; her three brothers, George F. Alley, Stephen L. Alley, Robert H. Alley; and her aunts, Kate, Ellen, and Edna who nurtured her gift for music. She touched so many lives and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 7, 2006, 12 noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Salt Lake. Viewing, Sunday, August 6, from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary and one hour prior to services. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery. on Aug 7, 2006.

John Richard Alley "Jack" John Richard "Jack" Alley died at his Bountiful home on Sunday morning, May 6, at 7:40 a.m. The fifth child of George Alley and Henrietta Johnson Fisher Alley, he had been born at his childhood home in Idaho on January 15, 1920. Throughout his life, he retained keen attachments to, and lively memories of, Bancroft, the small town where he grew up. Attending North Gem High School, he was president of his senior class and played trumpet and bass horn there and in his college band. Jack served in the Japanese Mission in Hawaii for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1940 to 1942, when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He returned to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah. There he met, in an English classroom, Mary Jean Backman, the joyous young woman who would be his love and companion until his last breath, and ever after. Their relationship blossomed in the shadow of World War II. Jack first joined the soon-obsolete horse cavalry, earning his spurs. He trained and served as an information and education officer, attending the army's specialized training program at the University of Pennsylvania, in Chinese area and language studies. Jack and Mary Jean married in the Salt Lake Temple on Feb. 2, 1944 and moved to Bountiful. Obtaining a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Utah, Jack began a 35-year career teaching high school in the Davis County School District. First at Davis High, then at Bountiful High, he taught geography, English, and history. He made a mid-career shift to teach math and also earned a master's degree in secondary education. He was active in the Davis County Education Association and also in the Davis County Democratic Party, which he chaired from 1950 to 1951. Jack was a devout church member, serving his wards in Young Men's and Sunday School presidencies and as ward clerk in six separate bishoprics. He and his wife served as a host at Pioneer Village and was elected president of the Mills Chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers. Jack had a fine baritone voice and especially enjoyed singing. He loved music, reading, traveling, flowers, fruit trees, and vegetable gardens. He always sought after the beautiful. His memory and extensive knowledge of subjects both familiar and esoteric astounded his acquaintances and colleagues. His children and grandchildren thought of him as the walking encyclopedia. They treasure memories of childhood camping trips with Dad and are glad that he and Mom had the opportunity for a lot of travel after they retired. John R. Alley was preceded in death by his parents, by his sister Phyllis Alley Spathelf, and by his brothers George F. Alley, Stephen L. Alley, and Robert H. Alley. He is survived by his loving wife; his sister Laura E. "Peg" Alley; his children-Peggy, Susan (Michael) Ehlers, John R. Jr. (Kathleen Kingsbury), Diana, George L. (Debra), Jeffrey B. (Ann), and Thomas G. (Valerie); 21 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren. He was close to his many brothers- and sisters-in-law and numerous nephews and nieces. Each and every one of us misses him very much. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bountiful 39th Ward Chapel, 1500 South 600 East. Friends and family may call Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main and Thursday morning 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services.
